My actual dealer invoice: fuel pump driver module, 66k miles, $620

At 65,000 miles, the fuel pump module on my white 2021 Silverado 2500HD 6.6L gas gave out. I’d seen something online about a GM fuel pump recall, so I checked, and my VIN didn’t qualify. Below I’ll explain why that’s common, what GM has published, and what the repair costs.

The best part came after the fix: fuel economy. I was averaging 11.4 mpg when I bought the truck. It’s around 12.5 now, and I’ve seen up to 13.5 mpg since the module was replaced. That’s on a lifted truck running 37×12.50R20 Toyo Open Country R/T Trails, which isn’t exactly built for fuel economy. These are my dash numbers, not a lab test. My speedometer is calibrated for the 37s and checks out against GPS, so I trust them more than I would on an uncalibrated lifted truck.

First: Which “Fuel Pump Module” Failed?

On 2020+ GM HD trucks, “fuel pump module” can mean two parts:

  1. The in-tank fuel pump module, which is the pump, strainer, and fuel-level sender inside the tank. GM’s catalog calls it a “Fuel Tank Pump Module.”
  2. The fuel pump driver control module (FPDCM), a small electronic controller that powers the pump. GM bulletins also call it the “fuel pump power control module.”

They cost very different amounts to fix, so ask your shop which one failed and get it in writing on the repair order.

Symptoms

GM’s parts page lists these signs of a worn fuel pump module: an inaccurate fuel gauge, abnormal noise, a Service Engine Soon light, rough idle, hesitation or stalling, excessive exhaust smoke, and fuel odor (>GM Genuine Parts). RepairPal adds loss of power and no-start conditions from low fuel pressure (>RepairPal). I’ve seen my best fuel economy since the fix, though that’s one owner’s experience and not a GM claim.

NHTSA complaints describe the same pattern. A 2020 Silverado 2500 owner reported repeated power loss and stalling that dealers couldn’t duplicate (ODI 11553922), and another had the fuel module and tank replaced for an intermittent check-engine light (ODI 11635321) (>NHTSA complaints, 2020 Silverado 2500).

“I Saw a Recall, but My VIN Didn’t Qualify”

As of October 18, 2026, NHTSA lists no fuel pump recall for the 2020–2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 (>NHTSA recalls, 2021 Silverado 2500). I don’t remember the exact campaign number I saw, but two real GM fuel pump recalls from this era get shared a lot in truck groups, and neither one covers HD pickups:

  • 21V-739 (GM N212332040): the fuel pump power control module on certain 2021 Cadillac Escalade/ESV, Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, and GMC Yukon/Yukon XL can cause the pump to fail or work intermittently, which can lead to a stall. GM used component trace data, so even many vehicles of those models aren’t included (>NHTSA campaign 21V739000, >GM recall report).
  • 20V-639: a pump jet-nozzle burr on the 2020 Buick Enclave, Cadillac XT5/XT6, Chevrolet Traverse, and GMC Acadia (>NHTSA campaign 20V639000).

It’s easy to see a “2021 GM fuel pump recall” headline and assume it covers your truck. Always check your own VIN at >nhtsa.gov/recalls, and ask the dealer to check GM’s system for open campaigns.

What GM Has Published for the 6.6 Gas (Bulletins, Not Recalls)

  • PIP5719A/B: crank-no-start or extended crank with DTC P12A6 (sometimes with P00C6, P00F4, P0098, P2199, P0096). GM blames a fuel pump control module internal capacitor and tells techs to replace the module. It lists 2020 Silverado/Sierra 2500/3500 with the 6.6L L8T gas engine, so 2021 isn’t listed (>PIP5719B).
  • PIT5636D: DTC P1005, a software error in the FPDCM. The fix is an updated module, and for gas engines including the L8T the listed part is GM 13540028. The bulletin’s model table lists 2019 1500s and 2020 Silverado/Sierra, so ask whether it applies to your VIN (>PIT5636D).
  • PIP5728B: on 2020 L8T trucks, the “Fuel Pump Driver Control Module Configuration” step needed after replacement could be missing from GM’s dealer scan software. An update fixed it (>PIP5728B). This tells you a replacement module needs configuration with a capable scan tool.

I found no GM bulletin that specifically lists the 2021 L8T for fuel pump module failures. The 2020 bulletins are the closest match.

Diesel owners (L5P Duramax), this one’s for you: GM’s PIT6396A (Aug 2025) covers 2020–2023 L5P trucks that keep setting P2535/P12A6/P10DA/C111B/P157A codes after the driver module is replaced with GM 13565642. The cause is a voltage back-feed through the water-in-fuel sensor circuit, and the interim fix is an inline diode. GM also warns about the wrong part (13565641) being installed (>PIT6396A).

Why Fuel Pump Modules Fail

  • Electronics: capacitor and software issues in the driver module, per the bulletins above.
  • Fuel contamination: GM calls it “one of the top reasons for fuel pump failure” and says to always replace the strainer when servicing the pump (>GM Genuine Parts).
  • Running low and clogged filters: RepairPal says both add strain (>RepairPal).
  • Wiring and connectors: GM says to check connections, pressure, and volume before replacing the pump. On lifted trucks like mine, also check frame-mounted harnesses for stretch and corrosion.

Parts and Cost Ranges

FPDCM replacement labor time n/a 0.5 hr per PIT5636D >PIT5636D

In-tank module fitment varies by bed length and tank setup, so look parts up by VIN. Get an itemized quote that names the part number before approving the job.

DIY or Dealer?

Driver module: The part is small and the bulletin labor time is short, but it needs configuration with a capable scan tool. In-tank module: This means dropping the tank or lifting the bed, depressurizing the system, and working around gasoline vapor. Experienced DIYers can do it with the right tools and ventilation. For everyone else, RepairPal’s estimate is the realistic budget.

How I’m Preventing a Repeat

  1. Keep the tank above a quarter full.
  2. Buy fuel from high-volume stations, as GM recommends.
  3. Get any intermittent check-engine light scanned right away, because P12A6 and P1005 point straight to the bulletins above.
  4. Track your MPG so you notice when something changes.
  5. Check frame harnesses after any lift work.

This wasn’t the only issue I’ve had. I covered the other electrical problems on these trucks too.

FAQ

What are the symptoms of a bad fuel pump module on a 2500HD? Hard or extended crank, no-start, stalling, power loss, hesitation, a check-engine light, a wrong fuel gauge reading, or pump noise.

Is there a fuel pump recall for the 2020–2024 Silverado 2500HD? Not according to NHTSA as of Oct 18, 2026. The widely shared 21V-739 covers 2021 full-size SUVs, and 20V-639 covers 2020 crossovers. Check your VIN.

What does P12A6 mean on a 6.6 gas 2500HD? For 2020 L8T trucks, GM’s PIP5719 ties P12A6 with crank-no-start to a fuel pump control module capacitor and directs module replacement.

How much does a fuel pump replacement cost on a 2021 Silverado 2500HD? RepairPal estimates $914–$1,067 before tax. GM lists the gas in-tank module at $295.84 MSRP.

Can a bad fuel pump module hurt fuel economy? I’ve seen up to 13.5 mpg since my fix, against a typical 12.5 these days. That’s one owner’s experience, so diagnose with codes and a pressure test, not the fuel gauge.
